Created by Douglas Choi Paul Hovey Steven Lischer Machiatto’s Cafe Pronto combines the quality and flexibility of your local cafe with the convenience of the modern day vending machine. Coffee, is inherently difficult to sell by vending machine. It doesn’t have packaging and the differences between its varieties are so subtle that the new models of vending machines that display different soft drinks in their branded bottles are useless. Customers also expect to be able to customize their coffee, something that is impossible with bottled soft drinks, as they are vaccum sealed and individually wrapped. To offer a full service café from a vending machine presents a difficult challenge. The menu must be large, but navigable. But if there are too many steps, then it is easy for users to get lost in menus. We opted for simple two-stage menu. The first stage, offers you a wide variety of different drinks split into three categories. Once a drink is picked, the second stage menu appears, offering context sensitive options that toggle for flexibility. Users can explore just about any option they want, adding milk, adding ice, changing sizes, and even infusing the coffee with different flavors. The second stage also provides visual cues when options are changed. If you add ice, a snow flake drifts down into a cup on the left, showing what you’ve added. If anything, this is the most original tablet at CES 2011 just because of the fact it can transform into a reasonable netbook with a full QWERTY keyboard and trackpad.
